Federal government programs
The federal government of Brazil offers the distribution of various items through its social programs.
A good example is Bolsa Família, which helps thousands of people gain a little more dignity.
Many families have government programs as their only safe and guaranteed income.
This is due to the fact that these same people do not have any other means of income or supplementary income.
Some new programs have recently started operating and many other previous programs have been maintained or modified, seeking to provide equal assistance to all people in need.
The best known programs are:
- Bolsa Família: an extra income based on school attendance and good service to school-age children. In case of missing classes or late vaccines, the program can be cut and the benefit cancelled.
- Emergency aid: much talked about in recent years, it was provided to the population at the time of the coronavirus pandemic, helping unemployed people and single mothers who had no other source of income.
- BPC (continued provision benefit): for people in poverty who have a physical or mental disability. I also pay for people who are no longer able to perform work functions and are not yet old enough to retire through the INSS.
- Child Labor Eradication Program: aimed at families that have children and adolescents up to 16 years of age and who work to help with household income.
- Crop Guarantee: paid to rural workers and farmers in case of crop loss due to natural reasons, such as drought, drought and excessive rainfall.
- Closed season insurance: artisanal fishermen receive this benefit during fish breeding seasons, when fishing is prohibited. They also receive in case of prevention of certain species.
Basic food basket
Very well known by many Brazilians, the basic food basket is made up of 13 items that were considered essential for daily consumption on the Brazilian table.
The quantity of each item or product may vary depending on the tradition of each location.
The inter-union department of statistics and socioeconomic studies, Dieese, is responsible for assessing the value of products in the basic basket.
This survey is carried out every month and the data collected is used to study the subject.
In each basic basket, the following items are found: rice, beans, sugar, coffee, oil, flour, milk, potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, meat and butter.
It is easy to see that there are several items that are widely consumed and are not on this list.
Values of the basic food basket in Brazil
The rise in prices on all items also affected the basic food basket. According to Dieese, the value increased throughout the national territory.
Of the 17 capitals surveyed, the price increased relatively in 16 of them.
In Florianópolis it had the highest price recorded, with the basic food basket costing R$ 700.69. The second highest price in Brazil was that of the basic food basket in São Paulo, at R$ 693.79.
In Porto Alegre, the increase led to a rise to R$ 691.08 per basket, while in Rio de Janeiro, it was R$ 673.85.
Even though there was a significant increase in almost all Brazilian capitals, the highest value recorded did not reach R$ 700.00.
Until then, the most expensive basic food basket was in São Paulo. This shows how great the increase was on all sides.
Federal government food basket program
